If you or – if you’re a stylist – your clients, have little need for high-end hair trimming tools like yoko scissors, scissor sharpening, expensive products etc., because they, well, just have very little hair, there could be an answer as to why. Hair can be your best – or your worst- asset.
According to scientists at Bonn and Düsseldorf Universities an important hair-loss gene has been uncovered. The researchers investigated over 500,000 positions in the human genome, and found a gene variant which occurs clearly more frequently in bald men than in control persons.
These are the same scientist that characterized the first hair-loss gene as being inherited through the maternal line, and explained why hair-loss in men often reflects that of their maternal grandfathers. This new gene, however, focuses on the gene’s relationship between father and son, and may explain similarities in cranial hair growth betweenthe two. This new study reveals that there is the potention for the son being bald – or exhibiting similar hair loss patterns – if his father is also bald.
This is only the second region of the genome that can definitely be associated with premature hair-loss, and hopefully it leads to a breakthrough in hair growth technology.
“We are now trying to discover the role played by this genomic region in hair-growth”, says Dr. Felix Brockschmidt of Bonn University. “Only then will we know whether we on the right track for new forms of therapy for male hair-loss”.

Stylists are often focused on the tools of the trade, high-end scissors, scissor sharpening, razor cutting and learning new techniques. But they often get opportunities to give back to their clients and to people in need. One such instance is demonstrated by Trendz Hair Salon in Rockford.
They’re hosting a cut-a-thon to benefit the organization “Children With Hair Loss.”
Anyone who had more than eight inches of hair cut off and donates it to the organization didn’t have to pay for the hair cut. All that hair is then made into wigs for kids. “Knowing we’re making a difference to a child is a wonderful feeling to all of us here and everyone who’s come in today,” said Trendz Owner/Stylist Teresa Tepp.
These types of opportunities are often occuring at salons around the nation and around the world – so check around! You may able to give back, while getting a free hair cut!

The need for scissor sharpening, didn’t even come into play with John Simpson’s award-winning hair series. Simpson, of Lewis Salon traded created this look, above, as one of several in a colo collection that he said allowed him to re–igninte his creativity. Simpson recently won the Best Haircolor award from the Professional Beauty Association during the 19th annual North American Hairstyling Awards (NAHA) – the color at left is from his award-winning collection, in which he wove different “stories” of texture and color.

Cameron Diaz’s boyfriend, model Paul Sculfor traded in illegal drugs for scissor sharpening. Well … sort of. He says he quit doing drugs because he didn’t want to lose his hair, thereby hurting his career and making his trips to his stylist more difficult and fewer and farther between. He says, “My hair started falling out in my partying years, because excessive cocaine abuse affects the adrenal system and halts hair growth. I’m lucky it grew back. I’m not vain, but I am obsessed with my hair.”
Hm … not vain? Is it possible to BE a model in Hollywood and not be vain? And we won’t judge him about being obsessed with his hair – we know plenty of other stars who would say the same thing. Take Victoria Beckham who is rumored to be in a fued with Katie Holmes over dueling hairstylist! Of course, it IS just a rumor, but it goes to show the level of obsession with hair and hair styles!
