i have some scissors that needs to be sharpened, what do i use and how do i do it?

If they are not super expensive scissors, you can sharpen with one of these – http://www.scissorsharpener.org/fiskars_98617397_scissors_sharpener.htm or cut up a potato chip bag made from foil. I have the Fiskars sharpener and have also used the chip bag method. The later was a happy accident. You can find the Fiskars sharpener at a fabric store or craft store with the scissors display.

If your scissors are for cutting hair or are super expensive, contact their respective companies as they may do this free or for a small fee.

Hardware stores are another place to check for this service and some fabric stores have someone who comes in for the day to sharpen scissors for their customers – a fee is involved.

where do barbers go to get their scissors sharpened?

I’ve got Wahl Clippers that need sharpening and wondered where barbers go to get theirs done. Should I find people who do scissors and hope they’ll do other things?

typically someone comes around the beauty salons and barber shops and brings a portable sharpening shop in a van and sharpens everyone’s scissors right then for a few $. About once a month.

How can I sharped scissors (or knives) at home?

I don’t have one of those sharpener trucks coming through my neighbourhood, so I was just wondering how I would go about sharpening my own scissors.

This might sound totally basic to some of you out there, but I just don’t know what kind of tool I would need or where to get it. I’m assuming some place like Home Depot would have something.

Any ideas?

You sharpen knifes with stones, They make special stones, but I’ve used flat ones found in my back yard. Scissors are harder to sharpen since most have rivits instead of screws holding them together. Here’s a helpful website

Where can I get my sewing scissors sharpened?

Apparently, my fabric store doesn’t sharpen scissors and can’t even make a recommendation.

Some brands, like Kai and Gingher, will accept scissors back for resharpening for a small fee… I think it’s $5 and postage for Gingher, just postage one way for Kai. Otherwise, there are independent scissors and knife sharpeners around — make sure they understand they’re working on sewing scissors rather than, say, haircutting shears as the angles are different.

Some scissors probably aren’t worth sharpening, like the Fiskar’s look-alikes that you can get at Walmart for a few bucks.

There are a couple of tricks that might "sharpen" your shears a bit. One is to wipe down the blades with a scrap of cotton fabric soaked in 70% rubbing alcohol or unflavored vodka. This can get some goo off the blades that tends to build up after awhile — particularly when the scissors are also used for stuff like adhesive tapes or embroidery stabilizer. The other thing is to make sure the pivot area of the scissors is clean and wiped down, with a tiny drop of sewing machine oil placed at the pivot. Dust and yuck in that area can force the blades apart enough to affect cutting.

FWIW, my favorite shears, hands down, are Kai, and I prefer the standard to the "professional" line because they’re lighter in the hand. Excellent balance, not very expensive. Buy the biggest ones you can open nearly to the pivot. Ship them back to the Kai/Kershaw plant in Tualatin, OR for resharpening when they need them — in my experience, not very often. I routinely cut 6-8 layers of cotton twill at a time with mine. My only connections with the brand are 1) I use and like them and 2) I know where the plant is in Tualatin.
