The pattern is made from two different steels, but you will never ever be able to see it without the etching.

I know how Damascus steel is made (and for the record, it is only Damascus steel if it is made in Damascus, otherwise it is just forge welded steel, just like champagne is only champagne if it comes from Champagne).

Actually real Damascus steel has that specific “wavy” pattern partly because of the amount of imperfections in the steel at the point of forging and well as the way that they used to hammer out the steel from the disks into the blade. FYI there still is no practical way to create damascus metal blades even with todays technology. The chemical composition is different to ones that are actually hundreds of years old.
